Applications are invited for two Research Assistant/Associate positions (Postdoctoral scientists) to work in the research group of Dr Hansong Ma at the Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge (http://www.gurdon.cam.ac.uk/; http://hsm142.wixsite.com/malab). One position is to investigate mechanisms influencing inheritance of mitochondrial DNA in Drosophila. The lab is examining factors that bias transmission of one mitochondrial genome over another and probing the impact of this on transmission of mitochondrial mutations and evolution of mtDNA. The other position will study mitochondrial recombination and develop genetic tools to manipulate animal mtDNA. Most of the work involves Drosophila genetics, mitochondrial genetics, various molecular, cellular and biochemistry techniques.
The candidates are expected to be independent and highly motivated. Ideal qualifications include demonstrated experience in Drosophila genetics and mitochondrial biology, but others are welcome to apply. The candidates will work independently but collaboratively with internal and external scientists. Excellent communication skills for scientific discussion are indispensable.
The positions offer a competitive salary and enjoy the diverse and vibrant research environment of the Gurdon Institute and University of Cambridge. The successful applicants will have frequent interactions with other neighbour labs of Drosophila and developmental biology and have a chance to develop collaborative research projects.
The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance, starting from 1st March 2019, with a potential renewal anticipated for another 3 years.
